That is as long as the design passes a review by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), cycling’s global governing body. Team Visma-Lease a Bike riders debuted the large helmet at the Tirreno-Adriatico prologue in Italy on Monday. However, on Tuesday, the UCI referenced the new design while announcing a review into its rules around helmets in competitions. As part of its helmet regulations, the UCI insists that all helmets used by professional riders are also available to the public. CNN has contacted Specialized, Visma-Lease a Bike, Giro and Rudy Project for comment on the UCI’s review into helmet designs.

Coste, who turns 100 on Thursday, won a track cycling Olympic gold in the team pursuit with Pierre Adam, Serge Blusson and Fernand Decanali. “It was a great honor to receive the medal from President Auriol, but the most valuable one is the Olympic medal,” Coste told Reuters. Coste, who was born in 1924 – the last time Paris hosted the Summer Olympics – needs a walker to move around, but his memory is fresh. Fernand Decanali, Pierre Adam, Serge Blusson and Charles Coste stand atop the podium at the 1948 Olympics. “There was no TV then, our only goal was to get the gold medal.

Oct 25 (Reuters) - Dominant Dutch cycling team Jumbo-Visma aim to stay at the front of the peloton next season with the help of an unlikely addition to their coaching set-up -- swimming guru Jacco Verhaeren. "Over the past few years, I have often exchanged ideas with Jacco", Jumbo-Visma sporting director Merijn Zeeman said in a statement announcing the unusual collaboration. "After our best season, we have to keep looking for improvements and new insights. Together with (head of performance) Mathieu Heijboer, I have come to the conclusion that Jacco can provide us with these new ideas and different insights from another sport. "What Jumbo-Visma does with my advice is up to them."

About five teams around Europe including Ineos Grenadiers are involved in the early-stage talks and more could join, the people said. Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard’s Jumbo-Visma team is also involved in the talks, one of them said. Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO) controls the Tour de France and La Vuelta while the Giro d'Italia is controlled by RCS Sports. This is not the first time cycling teams have explored a new cycling league project. Eight teams founded a league project called World Series Cycling (WSC) at the end of 2012 but the plans failed to materialise.

Kuss victory can boost U.S. road racing, says Horner
  + stars: | 2023-09-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Sepp Kuss's unlikely victory in La Vuelta a Espana could provide a timely boost for a flagging road cycle racing scene in the United States, according to Chris Horner whose 2013 triumph Kuss emulated on Sunday. The 29-year-old Kuss entered the race as a 'domestique' for more illustrious Jumbo-Visma team mates Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic. The road race scene is hardly booming in the U.S with few stage-racing opportunities for up-and-coming riders after the demise of the Tour of California, Colorado and Utah. "The racing scene in the U.S. is drowning or at best its nose is over the water. They were having meetings before the race, during the race, after the race, and then before everyone went to bed.

American Kuss crowned Vuelta champion, Groves wins in Madrid

The 29-year-old ended 17 seconds ahead of Denmark's Tour de France winner Vingegaard with Slovenia's Giro d'Italia winner Roglic one minute and eight seconds behind in third place. There was a celebratory mood amongst the Dutch team on the 101km 21st stage that concluded on a street circuit around the landmarks of Madrid. But the battle for the stage victory was a high-octane thriller as a small lead group featuring Groves and Remco Evenepoel was caught by the peloton in the final 500m. While Kuss celebrated the overall victory, Groves secured the green jersey for the points category -- the first Australian to achieve that in the Vuelta. When Kuss took the red jersey from Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ) on stage eight, most thought he was just keeping it warm for either Vingegaard or Roglic.

Kuss close to overall Vuelta victory as Evenepoel wins stage 18

Sept 14 (Reuters) - Belgium's Remco Evenepoel claimed his third victory in this year's Vuelta a Espana with a solo attack on a mountainous stage 18 and Jumbo-Visma's Sepp Kuss moved a step closer to winning his first Grand Tour on Thursday. Evenepoel's hopes of fighting the Jumbo-Visma riders for the overall title evaporated on stage 13 when he was dropped on the Col d'Aubisque and lost 27 minutes. "It was a super good opportunity to take the points for my jersey -- I took all the points -- and my third stage win is amazing to end the Vuelta with." Provided he avoids any mishaps on Friday and Saturday, Kuss will be a popular champion in Madrid. Vingegaard, who has been helped often by Kuss, warned that there is still a tough stage on Saturday and that the team needed to keep fighting.

Vingegaard said his Jumbo-Visma team had a plan to make Pogacar crack, but the 2020 and 2021 champion saw it differently. "I didn't notice, I was going day by day and I didn't see that I was feeling worse and worse. Vingegaard's season is solely focused on the Tour while this year Pogacar sought victories in Milan-Sanremo (4th), the Tour of Flanders (1st) and Paris-Nice (1st). He won the Fleche Wallonne but a crash on the Liege-Bastogne-Liege meant he could not prepare correctly for the Tour. Pogacar also wants to beat Vingegaard on the Tour before possibly moving on to "new challenges".

LE MARKSTEIN, France, July 22 (Reuters) - Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark was set to win his second Tour de France title after keeping a close tab on his main rival and 20th stage winner Tadej Pogacar in the final mountain ride of the race on Saturday. Overall, Jumbo-Visma rider Vingegaard leads Pogacar by seven minutes and 29 seconds with his United Arab Emirates team mate, Briton Adam Yates, in third position, 10:56 off the pace. Pogacar attacked on the last climb of the day, the Col du Platzerwazel (7.1km at 8.4%), and was followed by Vingegaard and Gall. Enormously popular local boy Pinot, riding his last Tour on his training roads with thousands of fans gathered with flags, beers and flares to support him one last time. SAINT GERVAIS, France, July 16 (Reuters) - Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar have made such a huge impression in the Tour de France that, in a sport that was marred by doping scandals, doubts about their performances have arisen but Denmark's defending champion welcomes the scepticism. On Sunday, Pogacar and Vingegaard clocked 18:27 on the final climb, beating four-time Tour winner Chris Froome's record by 42 seconds. "So yes, I fully understand the questions we're getting about it (our performances)," said Vingegaard. In 2006, Floyd Landis became the first Tour winner to fail a drugs test during the race after testing positive for the male sex hormone testosterone. June 16 (Reuters) - Swiss rider Gino Mader has died after crashing into a ravine on the descent towards the finish line in Thursday's stage five of the Tour de Suisse, his team Bahrain Victorious said on Friday. Mader, 26, crashed on the descent towards La Punt and fell into a ravine where he was found unresponsive by the race doctor and resuscitated before being air-lifted to hospital. In a Bahrain Victorious statement, team managing director Milan Erzen said: "We are devastated by the loss of our exceptional cyclist, Gino Mader. Mader joined the Bahrain Victorious team in 2021 and won a stage of the Giro d'Italia that year. PARIS, June 3 (Reuters) - Tour de France organisers have set up an anti-COVID protocol for this year's race, with riders and team staff banned from signing autographs and eating out of their hotels, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Saturday. Riders and staff members were allowed out of their hotels last year. Access to the paddock will be allowed when the Tour starts in Bilbao, Spain on June 29, with everyone required to wear a mask. Respect social distancing at the hotel," the chart, seen by Reuters, said. Giro d'Italia organisers last month set up an anti-COVID protocol near the halfway point of the race after overall leader Remco Evenepoel pulled out after testing positive for coronavirus.

A further round of tests were made on the riders and staff which showed Jan Hirt, Josef Cerny, Louis Vervaeke and Mattia Cattaneo had contracted COVID. "After the positive (test result) of Remco on Sunday evening, we had two more riders who were feeling unwell on Monday morning, but were negative on antigen tests," team doctor Toon Cruyt said in a statement. "Therefore a PCR test was carried out on the seven remaining riders, the results of which showed that the four guys were positive. We will continue to monitor and implement our testing protocol on the three riders and staff that remain at the race." Stage 11 of the Giro on Wednesday is a 219-km ride from Camaiore to Tortona.

Thomas has enjoyed little luck at the Giro but the 36-year-old said he is keen to improve his results. Three years earlier his race came to an end after he damaged his shoulder in a pile-up involving a police motorbike. "It would be amazing to win, especially after 2020 when I thought that was it for my chance to win the Giro," Thomas, who won the 2018 Tour de France, said. "I don't feel much pressure or expectation, but I'd love to take this opportunity.
May 10 (Reuters) - Favourite Remco Evenepoel crashed twice on stage five of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday, the first time after a dog strayed on to the road in treacherous conditions caused by driving rain, before Kaden Groves won the stage in a bunch sprint. The second crash did not affect Evenepoel's time as it happened inside the three-km mark, effectively neutralising the general classification times. But the crash left the Belgian world champion fuming while the rest of the bunch surged ahead and Alpecin–Deceuninck's Groves dominated the sprint to win the stage. The breakaway trio of Thomas Champion, Samuele Zoccarato and Stefano Gandin had built up a head of steam before they were absorbed by the peloton with seven km to go. Just super bad luck, with the second crash," he said.

March 18 (Reuters) - Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel won the Milan-Sanremo on Saturday to claim the first Monument of the season, 62 years after his grandfather won the race. However, Van der Poel launched his attack on the summit of the Poggio with 5.5km to go and stormed into the lead, extending it as they entered the city with the other three riders fighting it out for second place. The victory was Van der Poel's third after winning the Tour of Flanders in 2020 and 2022, following in the footsteps of his French grandfather Raymond Poulidor who won the race in 1961. It's one Monument every rider wants to win one day," Van der Poel said with a smile. Milan-Sanremo is the longest Monument race at 294 kilometres this year.
